Melbourne Australia Good Friday 6 April 2012

Friday 6 April 2012

‘Pure coincidence’ is all I thought I’d say about commencing my Blogging career on this date.  But actually, it wasn’t!  In the end, ‘coincidence’ had nothing whatsoever to do with it!  More like ‘bludgeoning’!  Yes! I’ve been bludgeoned into making this start today by a rather wonderful thing!

A Melbourne sporting organization has just knocked back zillions of dollars in order to disassociate itself from remarks made by its then-sponsor!  The local papers have quoted the remarks mercilessly! Remarks that could only be construed as racist, sexist, misogynistic, bigoted and horrifically nasty!

Hallelujah!  In this Dark Age of Freedom-To-Say-Whatever-Comes-Into-Your-Noggin-No-Matter-How-Hurtful-Or-Damagingly-Inciteful, Integrity has reared its head! A wonderful thing indeed!

But it made me think.

In a way, I’m glad I procrastinated over writing (yes, I procrastinate at the drop of any 1 of the 100 ready-prepared excuses lying fallow in my midfield brain).  It has caused me to pause, focus and give thought to whether or not there is any point in my having a Blog at all!  Do I really have anything to say - anything apart from lauding the virtues of integrity that is?  Is there anything I could possibly say that would be worth the time and attention it takes for someone kind enough to read it?

Yes, those well-publicised remarks made me think!

Why must we so viciously denigrate each other and the things in which we believe?  Can we not believe in something without feeling the need to tear down its unlikeness with hatred and bile rather than argument or logic?  Is our belief that weak?  Why must Black be White and not Black?  Why should an Atheist mock God?  Isn’t it enough to choose not to believe and argue rationally for Science?  Should not the metaphysician do likewise when arguing against the reality of the physical realm?  Why should a Christian rage at an Atheist, a Jew or a Muslim?  Are men really superior to women…or vice versa…or can we not find it in our hearts to see the excruciating necessity of both in all seasons for all equal reasons?  Why are we not content to be the person we are and make THAT the focus of our struggle to reach our potential.  Believing someone else’s ideology to be a lesser one than our own or that someone else is a lesser mortal than we ourselves is the most pathetic gateway to development and self-fulfillment there could possibly be!

The Universe is the sum of the parts of the Whole…but we seem to want to put some of the parts INTO a hole! An unequally divided hole at that!

Is anyone really interested in the views of a 72-year-old woman who was born deaf, became a paraplegic mid-TV career, experienced an instantaneous healing, produced four children in five years, worked with tribal Aboriginal women in Alice Springs and set up a community Arts Centre in Melbourne?

Who knows?

There’s only one way to find out!  I’m passionate, care fiercely and shall lay it all before you in the coming weeks…and let you be the judge!

    1. Thank you Brigid...I'm slowly gathering my feet with the help of my kids! It's still all a bit of a mystery...but then I enjoyed reading Agatha Christie when I was a kid! I just love having such an outlet for my thoughts and opinions and I know for sure you'd be the same! I'll certainly investigate connections!

    1. Oh Sandra...I am such a baby at this...my son had to tactfully point out that it might be a good idea to reply to the people who left comments! Ha! I'll get there...but not without help such as yours!

  7. Congratulations on starting this blog, Nancy. One thing I discovered [and you know why....] is that as long as you can press keys and think at roughly the same time, it's never too late to begin a blog.

You have 70+ years' experience to cherry-pick. This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone. What a good start!

  8. PS I'm absolutely certain the word 'blog' wasn't around when you were 6. Imagine trying to explain the concept to your Mum and Dad in the post-war days....

    1. Oh King of the Bloggers! I just had to get some words up and hope that my sons would remain sufficiently patient to help me with pics etc. later! I didn't even twig that it was better to leave a comment on a Blog than send a Tweet...but I'm learning! Thank you so much for your generous words and as for your post-war suggestion...my imagination stalled!
